Back Pack Upper Loon to Lower Loon (hot springs)

This is a great long weekend trip.  Flying into Upper Loon is an experience in itself.  On the flight up to Upper Loon you will cross over the Idaho City Basin, up the Middle Fork of the Payette river.  Pass just west of the sawtooth mountains over the western meadows of the Stanley basin.  You will descend through the Tango mountains and take a steep bank in front of a cliff and come in to land gracefully at Upper Loon.  The hike begins when you arrive the trail head is a short hike down the road from the airport.  From here you enter into the Frank Church Wilderness.  The trail is classic Middlefork of the Salmon country as you follow Loon Creek.  The steep mountains with a mix of sage brush and pine trees will leave you amazed at the geographical forces that have formed this country.  The trail has numerous hot springs along the entire route.  If you time it right you can camp at a hot springs each night.  Take binoculars and scan the cliffs, eventually what you thought was a spot of snow or a dirty white rock will begin to move and you will see it is a well hidden mountain goat.  There are numerous goats in this canyon.  Early in the year you will see elk enjoying the meadows laying along the stream.  There are several old homesteads that have slowly been erased by time, or demolished and burned to the ground by the USFS.   End the trip with a good soak at the Lower Loon hot springs and then take the short walk down to the airfield.  The flight back you will get to see the Middle Fork of the Salmon river as we fly you back on a slightly different path to Boise.   For those with more time spend some time at Diamond D ranch at the beginning or end the trip with a stay with Middle Fork Outfitters in their rustic cabins at the Simplot ranch.  This area has experienced several fires along the route and caution should be given for rock slides and fallen trees.  The trail is usually kept clear by the outfitters on both ends of the trip.  Another option to save cost if you have the time is to drive into Upper Loon (rough narrow road on a cliff edge), and then we can give you a ride back to Upper Loon when you arrive at Lower Loon.  We can operate in and out of Upper Loon through out the day.  Lower Loon is a morning only airstrip in the summer months.
